Philadelphia Inquirer Review
Blues Revue Review!
Below is the outstanding CD review that appears in the Feb/March 2009 issue of Blues Revue magazine!
Not since Susan Tedeschi has a young female blues singer made such a strong impression on me. At the tender age of 23, Gina Sicilia is just getting started, but her second disc, Hey Sugar, demonstrates that she's already come a long way. Sicilia's big boom of a voice grabs you and never lets go. What's more, nine of this album's 13 tracks are originals diverse in style and approach. Among the best: "I Pray Most Everyday," an acoustic-based lament that aches with longing. Sicilia just as easily shifts into a sultry mood on tunes such as "Jack & Jill," its midtempo funk groove putting a roll-in-the-hay spin on the classic nursery rhyme. "What the Moon Could Never Do" nods to country and gospel with a lyrical bent that sparkles. This kind of originality ensures that Sicilia will travel far beyond the strength of her remarkable voice. Producer and guitarist Dave Gross envelopes the songs with retro arrangements that recall recordings made decades before Sicilia was born. The R&B-laced title track would sound at home in Etta James' Fifties-era songbook, while the distorted guitar that opens "Cherry Tree" could have been lifted from Sun Records-era Howlin' Wolf. "Lowest of the Low" borrows heavily from the classic Muddy Waters blueprint. Yet, most impressively, these originals don't come across as carbon copies of the styles they're emulating: Sicilia takes classic sounds and builds a bridge to contemporary blues. by Michael Cote Blues Revue Feature
